or its sixth edition, Mido pays tribute to Mexican cultural identity with the Commander Gradient Catrines, the latest creation in this iconic collection dedicated to the Día de Muertos (The Day of the Dead).
This exceptional timepiece was long reserved for one of its oldest and most important markets: Mexico. Now one of the brand’s most distinctive and coveted creations, it attracts the attention of watch enthusiasts around the world. For this edition, MIDO is responding to global demand by making an exclusive number of pieces available across all its markets.
The iconic skull — symbol of this festival honouring the departed — is surrounded by flowers and enhanced with vivid, phosphorescent colours. Gracing its gradient dial, it draws everyone’s attention during the day and transforms at night into a completely different and mesmerising presence...
Rooted in rich Mexican tradition, this special edition is inspired by the figure of El Catrín — a skeleton wearing a top hat and elegant attire — and his female counterpart, La Catrina, who wears a large hat adorned with flowers. Both serve symbols of elegance and extravagance, having first gained notoriety during the Porfiriato, and then becoming closely associated with the The Día de Muertos celebration. Far beyond a simple reference to mortality, El Catrín embodies sophistication, authenticity and cultural pride, carrying with it a lasting legacy that transcends borders. This iconic figure continues to inspire contemporary design, serving as a reminder that Mexican artistry and identity flourish through symbols that celebrate life as much as they honour the past.
this spirit through a gradient dial that transitions from darkness to light, a visual metaphor for the continuity of time — connecting past, present and future in a single movement. At its centre, a skull motif enriched with vibrant details appears — not as a mere memento or symbol of the finality of death, but as a testament to resilience, presence and cultural heritage. It transforms a historical and cultural reference into a living expression, inviting the wearer to embrace tradition not as a mere memory, but as an elegant, vibrant and ongoing expression of Mexican identity.
Since 2020, MIDO has been celebrating one of Mexico’s most iconic cultural traditions through a series of editions of its legendary Commander collection. Each year, a new creation pays tribute to Día de Muertos, blending Swiss watchmaking excellence with the artistic audacity of this celebration. Finely engraved details, vibrant color schemes, Catrín motifs, and artisanal patterns become true mechanical works of art. These unique timepieces showcase MIDO’s creativity, technical mastery, and design expertise while reinterpreting Mexican cultural and artistic heritage in a contemporary way. Through these limited editions, MIDO creates a unique dialogue between Swiss watchmaking and Mexican culture. Each model tells a powerful visual story, rooted in local heritage, becoming both a collectible object and a vibrant tribute. A cultural and artistic project that positions the Commander collection in a strong symbolic and emotional dimension, year after year.
Both joyful and intriguing, this piece continues MIDO’s tradition of editions dedicated to the Día de Muertos, which began in 2020. The emblematic figure of El Catrín, surrounded by flowers, blends perfectly with the iconic design of Commander, which has been produced in the same way by MIDO without interruption since 1959.
The gradient acrylic dial – and the date disc in particular, which can be seen in a window at 3 o’clock – reveals the Caliber 80. This formidable latest-generation Swiss automatic mechanical movement is extremely reliable thanks to a high- tech NivachronTM balance spring and an excellent power reserve of up to 80 hours.
Powerful assets to commemorate the passing of time, again and again.
The distinctive acrylic dial of the Commander Gradient presents a unique spectacle. Transparent in the centre with a black gradient progressing to the edges, it offers a glimpse of the inner workings of the watch. For this special edition, the piece boasts equally striking paintwork: El Catrín is colourful and jubilant, created using no fewer than ten lacquers. At night, thanks to the Super- LumiNova® which emits a fascinating blue and green glow, its face is revealed bordered by a floral motif. The interplay of colours and luminescence can also be seen on the polished indexes – with a central groove filled with purple, yellow, dark blue or turquoise – and diamond-cut and faceted hands, adorned with material which is white by day and blue by night.
The date window at 3 o’clock reminds us of the passing days. A domed, faceted sapphire crystal protects this splendid face. The iconic satin-finished stainless steel case, topped with a polished rounded bezel, is set off to stunning effect by three easily interchangeable straps: in satin-finished steel, black leather with topstitching in blue, and textured rubber in orange MIDO’s signature colour, as well as that of the Mexican marigold, (cempasúchil) or flower of the dead (flor de muerto).
Reliable, robust and carefully decorated, the Caliber 80 beats at the heart of the Commander Gradient Catrines Special Edition. Boasting a power reserve of up to 80 hours, it is equipped with a NivachronTM balance spring offering high resistance to magnetic fields and shocks. Its oscillating weight, decorated with Côtes de Genève and engraved with the MIDO logo, is visible through the watch’s transparent case back. This exclusive edition comes in a specially designed watchbox crafted to honour its unique character.
